What's the lesson learned from these town halls?

S.E. Cupp, Author and Columnist: Do even the elite liberal media believe their own spin? It's hard to imagine. Any opposition to President Obama's bizarro-world policies (truly, some of this is right out of a creepy sideshow fun house) is dismissed as either crazy or stupid. Andrea Mitchell says we don't know what's good for us. Bill Maher calls us a dumb country. Huffington Post says we're all "Anne-Coulter-Ugly lookalikes." Real original -- and classy! But the newest attack isn't to call us crazy or stupid. It's to call us -- get this -- organized. That's right, we conservatives can throw away our dunce hats and psychiatric bracelets, because now we're actually a little TOO cunning.

Maybe the liberal press finally realized what Madison Avenue's known for decades -- you don't win new consumers by insulting them. But this newest approach -- to say we're "manufactured," as Robert Gibbs suggested -- is the most perplexing yet. You remember, the tea parties that brought hundreds of thousands of regular ol' Americans out on tax day were Astro turf -- fake grass roots, and according to Paul Krugman, proof that Middle America is embarrassing. And now all these concerned citizens popping up to plead with their local representatives in opposition to a scary Mary health care proposal are planted, props of some highly-organized kabal of conservative puppet masters.

It's so impossible for the Obama administration and his surrogates in the media to believe that average Americans care about anything as much as they care about American Idol, that the whole thing must be rigged. Liberals used to just be out of touch. I don't know what you call this.

Perez Hilton Jumps the Shark

By S.E. Cupp

When a popular television series runs out of compelling story lines, and resorts to the kinds of exhausted and utterly preposterous narrative tactics that suddenly find “The Brady Bunch” with a new cousin, or “Roseanne” with a new “Becky,” we say it “jumped the shark.

Mario Armando Lavandeira, Jr., better known as Perez Hilton, has done just this. Thanks to a slew of miscalculations and some public betrayals, he may soon become another victim of his own success and subsequent unraveling. And if he never recovers, he can blame the cult of liberalism and its ironic perfidies on which he so heavily relied.

Lavandeira used to merely post gossip, the kind that was often unsubstantiated. But blogging about Britney Spears or Whitney Houston didn’t require veracity to get page hits. Readers just wanted content, and quick. He would post throughout the day on celebrity sightings, Hollywood rumors, industry news and hot hookups. Eventually PerezHilton.com became a receptacle of trashy innuendo, breathless speculation, and overtly dirty denigration, which was often accompanied by crude digital drawings of body parts and bodily functions.

This was all fine and good for the celeb-obsessed tabloid readers who constituted his audience. And even those celebrities who were the subject of his ridicule secretly seemed to love the attention he brought them.

But as he started to turn the site into a platform for his liberal pet causes – gay rights (he is openly gay), gun control, the environment – he began to collect enemies, and not just on the Right. By slamming celebrities that he perceived as affronts to his causes, he became an uneasy arbiter of the worst kind of liberalism: the empty and morally relative kind. It wasn’t just about who’s lunching at The Ivy anymore – now he was political.

The hypocrisies abounded. One day he was criticizing an actor for driving an environmentally-unfriendly car, and the next he was calling a 9-year-old child actress “ugly.” He applauded celebrities who don’t wear fur but unabashedly glorified their lavish spending sprees and irresponsible (and even criminal) behavior.

And of course, he protested intolerance, championed equality and spoke out against homophobia. But it wasn’t that simple. He earned criticism from GLAAD and other gay groups for trying to “out” various celebrities, which most gay rights factions deem to be inappropriate, mean-spirited and a total abuse of power. When he wasn’t attacking Mormons for voting Yes on Proposition 8, or Christians for rigging “American Idol,” he was calling Sarah Palin a pig, Carrie Prejean a “c-word” and the Black Eyed Peas front man a faggot.

The latter indiscretion may mark the exact moment at which Perez Hilton lost his credibility (if he truly had any), and his support.

In a rare display of introspection, Lavandeira posted not one but two public apologies for calling the entertainer a gay slur during an altercation they had outside a Toronto nightclub in June. After previously slamming actor Isaiah Washington for using the very same word – and sanctimoniously calling for a ban of the N-word – Lavandeira solemnly wrote, “Apologizing for me is not easy.” And he insisted, “I am not nor have I ever claimed to be a spokesperson for the gay community.” Well, not any more he wasn’t.

And he issued an uncomfortable mea culpa for appearing unsympathetic to celebrities, referencing another fight between two entertainers. “I did not condone the violence, but I did make light of that situation. I regret that.” But he doesn’t regret what he said about Prejean, Palin, Rumer Willis (whom he has constantly berated for her looks), or 15-year-old Miley Cyrus (whom he routinely calls a slut.)
His sudden contrition is telling. His persona was always the petulant enfant terrible whose conscience only applied to anonymous liberal pieties and not to people It seems he may be aware that his star is falling, because in a final gasp at the kind of shock value that used to win him readers, he called the death of Michael Jackson a publicity stunt.

Very few of successes go out on top. They desperately cling to the kinds of reassuring adages that make gamblers believe one more roll of the dice could turn their luck around. Mario Lavandeira assumed he could bring America to the far-left with him as he shifted interests from gossip to politics. Thanks to a few fatal missteps, he might not have a forum for either.

"I Blame Barack Obama"

In case you missed it, we discussed Letterman's non-apology for calling Sarah Palin a "slutty flight attendant" and suggesting Alex Rodriguez rape her daughter on "Hannity" last night. I put the blame squarely on the president, for allowing that kind of rhetoric to happen around him during the campaign.

By allowing his surrogates in the media and Hollywood to use vile and indefensible language about Sarah Palin (and Cindy McCain, and Hillary Clinton...) he told the country, "Go right ahead." He should have said, "Stop, enough is enough. I have two daughters and and I don't want them to look back on this election and have to hear this kind of rhetoric about a capable, accomplished, smart mother of five." He didn't do it then, but he could do it now. He should issue a statement, condemning this kind of language about an American governor and public servant. His approval ratings would go through the roof, instead of the floor.

Addendum: A number of people have rightly pointed out that Barack Obama said during the campaign that kids should be off limits:

"Let me be as clear as possible, I think people's families are off-limits, and people's children are especially off-limits. This shouldn't be part of our politics. It has no relevance to Gov. Palin's performance as governor or her potential performance as a vice president."

Defending Sarah Palin's kids, while admirable, is not defending Sarah Palin. When she was called a woman-hater, a slut, mentally disabled, a devil-worshipper, Caribou Barbie, and "the worst thing to happen to America since 9/11," Barack Obama said nothing. When Sandra Bernhard said Palin would be "gang raped" if she came to New York City, Obama said nothing. Barack Obama, if he truly cares about the world in which his daughters are growing up, should take two minutes out of his day to issue a public statement condemning this kind of language...about a US governor or any woman.

I didn’t vote for Barack Obama (I’m one of the four in New York City it would seem). But as I’ve stated ad nauseam in print and over the airwaves, I’m now the loyal opposition, and I take that role seriously. So I’m prepared to help this man succeed…we need him to. And I’m prepared to give him credit where it’s due. I respect him tremendously for keeping Robert Gates as Secretary of Defense, for example. And making it to no fewer than 10 inaugural balls after a day of parading is a spectacular show of stamina. I couldn’t have done it.

But he’s not making it easy otherwise. Our new Secretary of the Treasury didn’t pay his taxes. Our new Attorney General made questionable legal decisions. Our new Secretary of State has connections to foreign monies. And our new CIA director has no intelligence experience.

Now, this bizarro-world experiment in reverse psychology may turn out for the best…who knows? Crazier things have happened. But I’m beginning to wonder what, exactly, our criteria should be for choosing our national representatives.

When we have elections, all of this is sorted out. Not always for the best of course – Spitzer, McGreevey, Ted Stevens, William Jefferson, etc. But when leaders are appointed, all good judgment apparently goes out the window.

Here in New York, the governor – David Paterson, also the beneficiary of an unlucky appointment – actually seemed to consider appointing Caroline Kennedy to Hillary Clinton’s old Senate seat. Ms. Kennedy’s a great fund raiser, and I’m sure our state could really use her money and connections, but this isn’t an episode of The Hills. We don’t just give out top jobs to quasi-famous people. She has no political experience. Literally – none. Luckily the governor came to his senses and appointed Kirsten Gillibrand, a blue-dog Democratic congresswoman with great credentials.

And we all saw what Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich did when he earned the power to appoint – in clinical terms, he went effing crazy, putting the Senate seat up for sale, jogging around Chicago like a Chippendale dancer in short-shorts, flopping that incredulous head of hair all around town, boycotting his own impeachment trial, and fooling around with the kooky, fun-loving girls on The View, who seem to think of Blago as some kind of lovable loser. They’re wrong, of course. He’s just a loser.

Now, to be clear, these moments of sheer political hilarity that have actually managed to tear my attention momentarily away from PerezHilton.com, are not a reflection of Barack Obama. But, his own appointments have been nothing short of befuddling.

Leon Panetta is, I’m sure, a super guy. After all, he wrote the Hunger Prevention Act and helped establish the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary; who wants to be hungry or hate on marine animals? But while these credits to his name may make him a humanitarian and a conservationist, I’m not sure they’ll help him weed out terrorists in Afghan caves.

Eric Holder, our new Attorney General made a horrific pardoning choice during the Clinton administration, and it wasn’t in forgiving the tax evader Marc Rich. It was his decision to pardon 16 FALN terrorists, who were behind more than 120 bombings between 1974 and 1983. This is simply inexplicable.

And Timothy Geithner, of course, admits his Turbo Tax wasn’t quite helpful enough. The man who we are entrusting to help solve our fiscal crisis and enforce our tax laws forgot to pay his own taxes. If he’s not good at figuring out our tax code, what exactly is he good at? Are we hoping he’ll be the first hitter since Ted Williams to bat .400? Are we counting on him to write the first interactive opera?

All in all, it’s a sorry state of affairs, and I’m just trying to wrap my brain around it. More than anything, my morbid curiosity can’t wait to see if these picks actually pan out, or if Barack Obama will rue the day he gave Panetta, Holder, Geithner and, yes, Hillary Clinton, keys to his administration. And maybe this means there’s hope for other seeming unqualifieds…does Katie Holmes need a job?

The Sweet Smell (But Not Taste) of Success

Tarpon, popular among sport fishermen, supposedly has no food value…although, in a pinch, I have a feeling it would keep you alive for a few extra days. Nonetheless, I wasn’t allowed to keep the 130-pound, 7-foot monster I caught off Miami over New Year’s. But after a lifetime of relative failures in this department, I didn’t need the trophy to leave totally satisfied.

I went to Miami to escape New York’s blistering 5-degree temperatures for a few days, and catch up with my friend Doug Giles, an accomplished fisherman and hunter. He’s a well-known conservative radio host (he is the creator and host of The Clash radio shows), a columnist (he has millions of readers at Townhall.com), an author (see recent titles like “How to Keep Jackasses Away From Daddy’s Girl”), and a minister (he’s a graduate of Knox Theological Seminary).

Doug is a raucous and rowdy mix of old-school, traditional conservative values with the kind of eff-you attitude folks like Ted Nugent have made millions on. He’s one part rebellious rock star, one part crusading missionary, and another part rough rider. And he was going to take me fishing.

I hunt and fish as often as I can. Not only do I love it, but as a 20-something woman and writer in New York City, it gives me some street cred to talk about the politics of gun laws, conservation, land use, and sportsmen’s issues, which I do frequently in various publications and on television. And as a political columnist and pundit, it’s always fun freaking out my well-heeled and expertly manicured contemporaries with tales of my latest adventures.

But those adventures, while always fun and terrific learning experiences, haven’t always gone to plan. In short, I’m PETA’s favorite kind of hunter: the one who never fires a shot. I spent 12 hours this past November in a deer blind on the frozen floor of a Coventry, New York forest waiting for a buck to pass in front of my 12-gauge shotgun. It didn’t.

And in August I went to Alaska for the second time in a year to catch my body weight in salmon and halibut. Three days into the trip and all I had caught was bronchitis. I spent the duration in bed, listening to the sounds of wild dogs scavenging through bags of fish parts–caught by my healthier tripmates– outside my window.

A few years ago I went deep-sea fishing off the coast of Brazil, where I was told I’d have a chance at marlin, dolphin and sailfish–some of the best sport fish out there. But the seas were so rough all we caught were 30 or so sand dollar-sized porgies, which we used for a fish fry on the beach at Buzios. They were tasty (as were the homemade caipirinhas the boat captain whipped up), but I would have gladly gone hungry and thirsty that night in exchange for a memorable fight with a marlin.

So when I agreed to an outting on the high seas with Doug and his friend Captain Gavet, my expectations were low. Being outside is always a nice break from the hibernation-like life of a writer, but I haven’t always been able to seal the deal, and Doug’s insistence that we’d “be in serious pain” the following day was no real assurance. I’ve heard it before.

A few hours into the day and things weren’t looking good. No marine life, unless you count the minor run-in I had with a Portugese Man O’War, whose sting causes very painful but temporary paralysis. As I awaited a slow and painful death, the captain started telling tales, not of fish he’s caught, but bodies he’s discovered while out on jobs. I grew worried I’d hook a John Doe before I caught a John Dory, or any other kind of fish.

As night fell and the Miami coastline lit up, I resigned myself to the prospect of another fishing trip without the big payoff. But then, suddenly, screaming reels. I grabbed the rod and whatever was on there was massive. It took me 40 minutes to muscle the tarpon, bigger and longer than me, up to the boat, where we took a dozen blurry pictures before cutting it loose. My abdominals, shoulders, biceps and back were shredded. I could barely hold the celebratory cigar Doug cut for me…it felt like it weighed 30 pounds. Shaking, I enjoyed a Corona and reveled in the thrill of an utterly successful outing, where I caught the fish of a lifetime. Finally.

I’ve learned tremendous patience from fishing and hunting. It’s not about the kill. Responsible hunting and fishing, in fact, means that you put the integrity of the sport ahead of the trophy. It’s frustrating, of course, but it’s an invaluable lesson. It would have been nice to have kept the fish, either for dinner or to mount. But rules are rules, and I’m happy to abide. Maybe one day another frustrated fisherwomen from the wilds of New York City will catch that same tarpon, and leave with the a similar satisfaction. Or maybe, he and I will meet again. I look forward to the duel. In the meantime, it’s back to life in the big city, where the only hunting I do is for my keys, and the only fishing I manage is for a little generosity from my editors. Tight lines, indeed.

Stop in to your local police precinct or fire station with some homemade treats. I like to bring cupcakes because, well, I can call them "Cuppcakes." And everyone knows I love a good play on words.

Or bring some toys into your nearby hospital...imagine being a 7-year-old and having to slurp down green Jello tonight with nurse Helga.

And of course, if you can, bring some food in to your local soup kitchen or homeless shelter.

Sacramento, CA – Move America Forward, the nation’s largest pro-troop grassroots organization, announced today their nationwide tour to support the troops will include a stop at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Melanie Morgan, Chairman of Move America Forward, said, “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to be able to personally tell the United States military personnel at Guantanamo Bay how much we appreciate their service to America. We especially appreciate those who have had the difficult duty of containing the worst terrorists, who are imprisoned at the Naval Facility.”

Move America Forward has been conducting a nationwide tour to support sending care packages to the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. The tour began in Sacramento, California, with a parade to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the California Vietnam Memorial and will now end at the U.S. military facility in Cuba.

“With Americans focused on the economic problems facing our country, we have to ensure that our troops in harm’s way are not forgotten during the Christmas and Hanukkah holiday season. Our care packages are heading to Iraq and Afghanistan, but it is also important to remember our troops who are keeping the terrorists at bay just 90 miles from our shores,” said Morgan.

The trip is being facilitated by Kylie Williams, official ambassador for veterans’ advocacy for the State of Florida. Traveling on the tour in addition to Morgan will be MAF staff members Catherine Moy, Danny Gonzalez and Ryan Gill. Also accompanying the group will be Gold Star Mom and MAF spokesperson Debbie Lee, whose son Marc Alan Lee was the first Navy SEAL killed in Iraq. Lee said, “Move America Forward made possible a trip to Kuwait and Iraq so that Melanie and I could join our troops during the holidays last year and personally distribute Christmas and Hanukkah cards to our troops. This year we are honored to travel to Guantanamo Bay to express our thanks and see for ourselves the honorable work done under difficult circumstances by our military.”

“With so many politicians irresponsibly criticizing the job being done by American troops at Guantanamo Bay, we thought it was important for us to go there and personally tell them that the American people are 100% behind them – despite what a few self-serving politicians have to say,” Morgan concluded.

Diplomatic Disturbance

Barack Obama and his anti-war supporters in the U.S. and abroad are loath to acknowledge that "diplomacy first" is only so effective when challenging Islamic terrorists. Voters should think long and hard about a candidate who wants to pull out of Iraq before stability is achieved, and who wants to sit down with Iranian leaders to amicably discuss our shared futures. As we sit on the precipice of our sixth year in Iraq, it's worthwhile to examine some lessons from the eight-year conflict that, more than two centuries ago, gave us our first real taste of Islamic terrorism.

Often referred to as "America's Forgotten War," the Barbary Wars, like so many other important things, are seldom taught in U.S. history classes. With the Revolution and Civil Wars headlining on the main stage of American history, there's rarely time in a school year to delve deeply into our country's smaller skirmishes.

But small these weren't. The first Barbary War lasted from 1801 to 1805, and the second from 1812 to 1816.

Barbary pirates from the Muslim states of Algiers, Tunis, and Tripoli had been marauding Europe for years, targeting Christian and other non-Islamic merchant ships -- not just for their goods, but for their men. More than one million European Christians were captured, imprisoned, and sold as slaves in Northern Africa. In many cases, they were held until they died or converted to Islam.

A Tripolitan envoy to London, Ambassador Sidi Haji Abdrahaman, explained the position of the Muslim states to Thomas Jefferson and John Adams in 1786. "It was written in their Koran, that all nations which had not acknowledged the Prophet were sinners, whom it was the right and duty of the faithful to plunder and enslave; and that every mussulman who was slain in this warfare was sure to go to paradise."

After America gained independence from the British Empire, she was on her own in the rough and pirate-laden seas of the Mediterranean. Barbary pirates traditionally left merchant ships flying the British and French flags alone, but now that America was no longer a British colony, her ships were unprotected and vulnerable to attack.

American Democrats were reluctant to go to war against the Barbary states, and urged U.S. ambassadors to negotiate a peaceful agreement with the Islamic heads of state. They argued that after a costly Revolution, the U.S. should focus on western expansion and other domestic concerns. America had no navy, and was ill-equipped for battle on the seas, particularly in enemy territory abroad where Muslim nationals had clear advantages.

Faced with a superior force, John Adams agreed -- much to the protest of Thomas Jefferson -- to pay taxes to the North African countries, just as many other nations had done. These taxes covered the freedom to send out their trade ships, and to pay the costs of ransom for any captured Americans. They would equal a whopping 20 percent of U.S. annual revenues in 1800.

As the years ticked on, and paying tribute became a bitter but habitual pill to swallow, the U.S. slowly built its navy. In 1801, on the day of Thomas Jefferson's presidential inauguration, the Pasha of Tripoli demanded $225,000 to give American ships safe passage through Barbary waters. Jefferson refused, promising nervous Americans that agreeing to pay tributes would only welcome more attacks on U.S. and European ships. The only way to end the Barbary reign of terror would be to go to war.

The American navy and the marines invaded Tripoli, and with the help of a coalition of Arab, Greek, and Berber allies eventually captured the city of Derna. In 1805, the U.S. and Tripoli signed a peace treaty, but the U.S. paid a ransom of $60,000 for the release of American prisoners. Some thought the ransom payment an acceptable price to pay for American lives. Many others believed the U.S. should have held its ground, and demanded a free release, by force if necessary.

Peace did not last. With the War of 1812 as a brutal distraction, America left the Barbary pirates unchecked and once again took up the unhappy habit of paying tributes for safe passage. More ships were taken, more men were tortured and enslaved. And in 1815, after refusing to pay the most recent tax, the U.S. again went to war with North Africa, eventually forcing the Dey of Algiers to sign another peace treaty and end once and for all the practice of taking Christian captives.

THOUGH there are many differences between the Barbary Wars and the current war in Iraq, there are also obvious similarities, and a number of scholars have pointed them out. Joseph Wheelan, in Jefferson's War: America's First War on Terror 1801-1805, enunciates these commonalities and provides some astute analysis of America's challenges with terrorism -- past and present.

Clear lessons can be gained without the benefit of academic scholarship, however. One is that Islamic terrorists want to rid the world of non-Muslim people. Two, negotiating with Islamic factions is often unreliable. Three, leaving Islamic terrorists unchecked costs lives. If there's any argument for staying in Iraq until there is stability and for dealing with Iran firmly and decisively, it exists within the narrative of the Barbary Wars. Let's just hope that Barack Obama and Joe Biden learned about them in school.

The Hunt

Had a fantastic weekend hunting in upstate New York. I saw a beautiful buck, but didn't have a clean shot, so I went home empty-handed. But sitting outside, away from the noise of the city, under the trees...was absolutely prize enough. Saw some other critters, like a mink, a rabbit and a fox. But the driving rain grounded most of the deer for hours at a time. Looking forward to next season...for everyone still out there, happy (and safe) hunting.
